Update from the Land of Nod

Just a quick update from the merry old Land of Nod.

1 – Finished maps for Antigoon and Blackpoort today, for NOD #7 to be published in Feb 2011. Haven’t numbered Antigoon yet, but will soon. I’m going to work on Lyonesse tomorrow and then get working on writing those city-states up.

2 – My Hawkeyes won the Insight Bowl having lost their top receiver (drug charges) and first and second string running backs to transfers before the game. How ’bout them Hawks?!

3 – Finished writing up the powers for the alpha release of Mystery Men! Should finish up the rules this week or next, at which point I (and anyone else) can do some playtesting. I should begin showing off some of the art in January – can’t wait. I have a good feeling about this one.

4 – Watched Mystery Science Theatre 3000 yesterday with the kid – Hercules Unchained. It (the MST3K show) was made 20 years ago – damn I feel old.

5 – Starting work on Hexcrawl Classics #3. I’ve seen some of the art for the first two, and when I get permission will show some of it off on the blog.

NOD 6 – Ready for Sale … Finally

Well, NOD #6 put up a terrific struggle, but I’ve finally put it into print. You can download it HERE for free, or purchase for $11 HERE. 136 pages, it includes …

Western Venatia hexcrawl

Level 3 of the Pleasure Palace of Izrigul – an odd level both figuratively and literally

The Traveler class

Holiday Magic

Gods of the Motherlands

Another installment of Phantastes

Merry Christmas and enjoy!

NOD #6 Now Available to Download

Rant begins now …

Yes – NOD 6 is ready to download, but not to purchase in print. Yet. I’m telling you what – I’m so frustrated right now, I don’t know what to do with myself. Just one problem after another. I put all my documents together in Word and then convert to PDF. This is a major pain in the butt, but I’m not exactly running a business here, and Word is what I’ve got, so Word is what I use. Anyways – there are so many hassles involved with going Word to PDF – you have to physically (digitally?) embed all the fonts, many of which are “hidden”, so I have to add invisible characters to a document so I can find them and embed them, PNGs look like crap when you convert to PDF, so I have to use BMP and JPG, and this time around they look like crap as well, which in itself is immensely annoying when you work your butt off to create a nice looking document. So I do my conversions after hours at work because I have the full Adobe suite there, get home to make the actual Print-On-Demand thing at Lulu and discover that the document has an un-embedded font in it – Arial Bold Italic. Yes, the arial and times new roman fonts, which do not actually appear in the document (well, arial does in the OGL) will not self embed – pretty much every other font will, but not the TWO MOST BASIC FONTS KNOWN TO MANKIND!!! Aaaahhhhh!!! So, long story short – nothing to purchase tonight, but the e-book for NOD 6 is a free download as my holiday gift to the gaming community that has helped make my dream of being a writer/publisher come true. So, while I go outside and punch a tree for a couple hours, please enjoy the fruits of my labors in their slightly mangled form courtesy of Adobe and Microsoft, my two best friends and two worst enemies tonight.

End of ranting

NOD in 2011
Well, my fervent hope is that I can sell some ad space in the magazine next year and make the PDF downloads free. I’m charging $2 for quarter page ads, $4 for half page ads and $8 for full page ads. My last free issue, NOD 1, has been downloaded between 750 and 800 times, so the exposure to the old school community should be pretty good for the money you spend. My email address is in my profile, so send me an email if you’re interested. If there isn’t enough interest in ad space, I’ll just keeping doing like I’ve been doing – around $10 for print, $3.50 for e-books.

NOD 7 in February will feature three city-states – Lyonesse, Antigoon and Blackpoort – in the same format I’ve done with Ibis and Ophir. Knights and dames and merchant princes and thieves and assassins and troll bridges, pigeon pie – something for everybody!

NOD 8 in April is slated to feature JD JarvisMutantFront. First guest contributor, and I’m very excited to see what he comes up with. Art will be commissioned for this one, and it will be chock full of mutated Great War goodness! Check out Aeons & Auguries for more MutantFront goodness.

NOD 9 in June will launch some coverage of Mu-Pan, the realms of the Dragon Kings. I’ve been done some pseudo-European and pseudo-Arabian material with Venatia and the Wyvern Coast/Nabu material, and now I feel like dipping my toes into Asian myth and folklore. It’s also a great excuse to use some of great material in Ruins & Ronin, Mike Davison’s take on Asian adventures for Swords & Wizardry. NOD 10 in August will continue with Mu-Pan.

NOD 11 in October is slated to feature another guest contributor – my good friend Luke DeGraw. Luke worked up some conversions of Castles & Crusades for playing Robotech, and he’s going to put together something that involves no challenges to legal copyrights or intellectual property, but does involve old school rules and giant freakin’ robots. Should be awesome.

And back to December and NOD 12, where I’ll feature a city of Mu-Pan and God only knows what else. Hey – I’m amazed I’ve thought this far ahead! Hopefully I’ll throw some support for PARS FORTUNA and Mystery Men! in there along the way, and if anyone else wants to contribute something, let me know! Oh – and look for Hexcrawl Classics from Frog God Games – I wrote ’em. They’re hexcrawls (yes, not just a clever name) without a setting, though I’m kinda sorta inventing one as I go. The maps are based on locations in North America, so Huzzah!s will be awarded if you can guess the locations.

So, until tomorrow when I’ve had time to fix my #$%@#$@ PDF and post NOD 6 for sale – enjoy the free download and keep on gaming!

Coming Up For Air …

It’s been a busy weekend – daughter’s birthday party (’80s theme, because, you know, the ’80s was a looong time ago – feeling elderly now) and working on getting NOD #6 out. In the process, I made a quick index to some of the monsters, races, classes and spells that have appeared in the series so far. You can find it on Google Docs HERE if you’re interested. I think there’s supposed to be some way I can embed it in Blogger, but I haven’t figured it out yet. When I do, I’ll just make a new page on this blog with the index. So – hopefully by the 14th (late) or 15th (early) I can have the last issue of 2010 published, and then get to work on Mystery Men!, Hexcrawl Classics #3 and NOD #7. Like anyone in real estate will tell you, it’s a good thing to be busy!

Cheers!

Oh – current line-up for NOD #6: Western Venatia, Gods of the Motherlands, The Traveler PC Class, Random Owlbear Tables, Holiday Magic, Phantastes, Pleasure Palace of Izrigul (3rd Level).

I’m as good as my word …
And lest I forget my first …

Print these babies out and keep them in your wallets – there’s nothing better for picking up chicks!

Thanks everybody who has followed, stopped by and looked, commented, downloaded or purchased – it’s been quite a year in the Land of Nod, and I hope to have many more.

PARS FORTUNA Complete Rules Are Go!

I’ve doggone gone and done it – PARS FORTUNA is up for sale. I’m nervous as hell about this one – so many more “moving parts” than the NOD magazines. If any errata come up, I’ll post it on the site as a free download, of course. Fortunately, Lulu is running a sale right now – 20% off anything with the coupon code DONE305 at checkout.

And don’t forget to pick up a PARS FORTUNA t-shirt – ’cause, you know, metal apes on t-shirts are all the rage these days.

A review has appeared at Geordie Goes Gaming!

The basic rules were given a thorough review at Aeons & Augauries by JD Jarvis.

PARS FORTUNA: Basic is GO!

So, I’m still waiting for one piece of art before I can publish the complete rules to PARS FORTUNA – hopefully it won’t be much longer, but I’ve seen a preliminary of the art and it is worth waiting for. Anyhow – missing that art doesn’t keep me from posting the free download of the basic rules, a link to which can be found HERE, or on the free downloads page (see above and to the right).

I’ve had a blast writing these rules, trying to take a randomly generated bunch of races, monsters and treasures and making them (sorta) make sense. There are some alternate rules to try out and hopefully people who play old school rules (or new school) can find something worthwhile for their game.

If all goes well, the Complete Rules will soon be available on Lulu.com. The print book should go for $15, the PDF for $7. The Complete Rules will contain 12 race-classes, over 120 spells new to the old school, 120 new magic items, 140 new monsters, new magic rules, alternate rules for combat, equipment and encumbrance, rules for skills and knacks (i.e. a very simple skill system), a sample sandbox setting, a sample 1st level dungeon and general conversion notes for other old school rules – including adventurer, magician and warrior classes for folks who prefer to separate race from class. All packed into about 120 pages.

For now, check out PARS FORTUNA: Basic and let me know what you think.

UPDATE: I’ve incorporated some corrections suggested by JD Jarvis of Aeons & Auguries (and he wrote a review of the basic rules) and Gonster of Attack Plan R, one of the erstwhile followers and friends of the blog. All the links now point to the updated document.

Mystery Men! on Kickstarter – Final

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1931648155/mystery-men-a-rules-lite-comic-book-hero-game/widget/card.js

Yes – the Kickstarter patronage project for Mystery Men! is finito! It’s been a fun experience running this, and I must say that Kickstarter is a really well organized, easy to use system for this kind of thing. So, today is the last chance to be involved at the $10 Silver Age level or $20 Golden Age level. Thanks again to everyone who has checked it out, and especially to everyone who has joined in. I can’t wait to commission the art!

By the by – I’ll be posting some new Western Venatia stuff tonight (if you’re into that sort of thing).

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! NOD #5 Now Available

Just got NOD #5 up and available on Lulu.com.

In this issue of NOD: Vampires from around the world, Ibis – City of Sorcerers, The Illusionist, Medieval Mining, Level 2 of Izrigul’s Pleasure Palace, Mystery Men! – converting your fantasy RPG into a comic book RPG and the continuation of George MacDonald’s classic story “Phantastes”. 84 pages.

$9.00 for the book, $3.50 for the e-book.

NOD #6 is scheduled for December, and in the spirit of the season will be another free download (something I hope to make a NOD tradition, assuming I can keep this thing going long enough for anything to count as a tradition).

For 2011, I’m exploring the idea of doing free downloads and just selling advertisement space – $5 full page, $3 half-page, $2 quarter page. If you’re interested, let me know – in terms of circulation, NOD #1, my other free download, has been downloaded almost 670 times.

Mystery Men! Update – The Final Countdown

The last year has been a fun one for me, filled with new experiences – blogging, publishing, being published and running a patronage project. Well, the last of those experiences is in its final hours – 33 hours as I write this. I again want to thank everyone who has signed on as a Silver Age or Golden Age patron, including our three newest Golden Agers, Doc Grognard, Brian Blakley and Johnny Splendor. The project is now funded up to $290, which should net us some nice art for Mystery Men! I’m also happy to announce that Pierre Villeneuve, who draws golden age heroes for the Flashback Universe, has opened his library to the project as well. Of course, if you’d like to slip into the project under the wire, you can still go HERE to become a patron.

Once the Kickstarter project is officially closed tomorrow I will be sending out ballots on which heroes are to be illustrated by Joel Carroll (that’s one of his pieces at the top of the post). When all the ballots are in and the money is sent to me (Kickstarter says that the money transfer takes a couple weeks) I will make the official commission with Joel and then dive head first into the Mystery Men! rules.

For the last update, I now give you the final batch of heroes seeking an illustration. I call this final batch “Everybody Else”, because it includes, well, everybody who didn’t fit into a category I already posted but was so awesome (read “bizarre”) that I had to post them.

Okay, I love the Venture Brothers and Tick franchises, and definitely have a soft spot for goofy hero concepts and names. Barry Kuda takes the cake! Honestly, he’s Aquaman with a sillier name, and for this, I love him.

Carol is orphaned after an attack on her parents. An eagle carries her to the Dawn Land, where she is raised by wolves and eventually becomes the leader of the pack.

Mekano is a robot invented by young scientist Bill Foster. He is stolen by the Nazis, but beats the crap out of them and returns to his creator to be used a tool of justice. Every comic book game needs at least one kick-ass robot.

Minimidget and his sidekick and girlfriend, Ritty, are the victim of a shrink ray. They fight crime using miniature cars and airplanes, and Minimidget uses a tiny sword and rides a rabbit named Bucky. The toy line just creates itself!

Brett Carson has super strength and two sidekicks, Kid Muscles and Miss Muscles, and frankly was just so creepy I had to put him in the mix.

I think part of the beauty of the Golden Age of comics is that it was a Golden Age – there was so much demand for comic books that just about any idea, no matter how odd, might make it into print. Hence – the Purple Zombie, controlled by one of his creators, Dr. Hale, he is used to fight crime.

The Red Panther protects the people of Africa (a large area to protect) from those who would prey on them. Getting his costume from a tribal chief, it is the skin of a mythical red panther, and by wearing it he becomes the panther’s representative on Earth.

[Correction – I originally thought he was the son of a tribal chief, and thus an African hero. From looking at a couple comics, it now appears he is a white guy doing the Tarzan bit. Somewhat disappointing, but I think he could easily be re-created as an African hero).

A taxi driver (real name unknown), he gains the power of the Silver Streak after being hypnotized by a swami who is into building race cars. Oh yeah, he also has a secret fluid in his blood that lets him defy gravity. The Venture Bros. have nothing on the Golden Age of comics.

Jon Dart, newspaper editor, fights crime as Swiftarrow. I like this guys dark look and the fact that he uses a crossbow instead of the traditional bow.
