Mystery Men! – A Heroine and a Villainess

BLACK PHANTOM
Born on the blazing streets of Silverado City, Helena Holt made more than a few wrong turns in her life. The daughter of one of the oldest families in Silverado City, she resented growing up as the daughter of the Sheriff Andrew Holt and soon found herself involved in juvenile crimes of a fairly minor nature. An angry confrontation with her father convinced her it was time to leave home and join her boyfriend and his gang in committing a more serious crime.

The next day, while he was at work, she entered his room planning to abscond with some cash she knew was kept in his closet, and instead found a polished wooden box. The box contained two six shooters, embossed with silver tracery, and a collection of old letters. Delving into them, she discovered the secret family history of her great-grandparents (and her namesake), Tim and Helena Holt, better known in the Old West as Red Mask and Black Phantom. After a couple hours spent reading the letters, Helena realized she was meant for nobler things. From that day forward, she dedicated herself to study and practice. By the time she had graduated from the UNSC (University Nevada at Silverado City) with a degree in the forensic scientists, she was ready to wear the mask and carry the guns of the Black Phantom. Naturally, her father, now retired as sheriff, was aware of the true identity of Silverado City’s newest super heroine, and he couldn’t be happier.

Helena now works in SCPD’s CIS department and, when a case is more than the police can handle, she takes on the mantle of the Black Phantom. She is also a founding member of the Silver Sentinels, a group of super heroes with a rotating membership based in a secret mesa headquarters in the American Southwest and serving the Western U.S., Canada and Mexico. The Silver Sentinels include Commandette, the Conqueror, Fu Chang, the Great Defender, Jet Powers (leader and funder behind the team), Mighty Man, Super Ann, Captain Flash, Red Bee, Toreador and the heroic team of 13 and Jinx (man, they look familiar).

FASTER PUSSYCAT
Charlotte Munroe had grown up a poor woman with rich tastes. Working as a beautician in some of the finest resorts of Silverado City, she grew jealous of the wealthy, pointless women who spent their days lounging in spas while she worked and slaved to make them beautiful. On a night that found her particularly depressed, she went for a walk and witnessed something fall from the sky and land on the sidewalk a few yards in front of her without a sound. Coming closer, she discovered a coin or disk of black metal. Touching the disk, she heard a voice in her head urging her to sleep and dream, and she fell into a deep coma, the disc grasped tightly in her hand.

Two weeks later, she awoke in the hospital. The disk was gone, but a black circle was now in evidence on the palm of her hand. While in her coma, she was given to bizarre, frightening dreams of writhing oozes and toad-things of every color of the rainbow, and of herself possessed of wondrous powers. Rubbing the disk, she said the words “I wish it was all true” and found herself transformed by the Lord of Madness.

Set loose on an unsuspecting city, Charlotte, nicknamed Faster Pussycat by a wag in the local press, went on a crime spree in the resorts of Silverado City until the combined efforts of the Black Phantom and the Silver Sentinels finally brought her down. A brief stint in Iron Island in Shore City ended when Harletron 3000 pulled off a rare jail break from that facility, and the two Agents of Chaos are now on the loose.

Mystery Men: Harletron 3000

When Dr. Van Voort built his first android, he garbed it as a harlequin in order to demonstrate it at the 5th annual Conference on Advanced Thinking Machines. After years of labor and invention, he had created the first robot that could think on its own and move in such a human-like manner that, when equipped with false flesh, it was indiscernible from an actual human being. And then, in the still of the night, chaos.

While some have suggested it was a mere glitch or bug, Dr. Van Voort always maintained that it was an act of sabotage. In this, he was actually correct, though his accusations against his colleagues were unfounded. In truth, the mechanical man with the human face drew the unwelcome attention of an from a parallel dimension called the Lord of Madness. On the night before the conference, Harletron 3000 pulled on his mask and crept out the window.

Naturally, Dr. Van Voort was beside himself. He couldn’t bring himself to attend the conference, but imagine his surprise when his android did. As the assembled scientists demonstrated their newest advancements, the android struck, carrying away any number of advanced components. Making its escape, the robot, dubbed Harletron 3000 by the press, established himself in an abandoned factory in Shore City’s industrial corridor and installed the components. Eventually, Harletron 3000 would be cornered by the Golden Gladiators and plunged into freezing water. Though thought destroyed then and on other occasions, Harletron continues to show up again and again to challenge Earth’s heroes, always attempting to improve itself with stolen technology or sew the seeds of chaos and madness on Earth.

Image from Golden Age Comic Book Stories. Harletron 3000 will be appearing soon in NOD 9 as a minion of the Black Dragon in the adventure Washed Out in Washoe. Assuming I finish writing the darned thing.

Need Superhero Minis?

You might want to check this out. Marcio Takara did these tiny illos of superheroes a while back, and though most are no longer posted individually, you can grab them en masse. Print them out, glue them to cardboard, cut them out and then affix them to some binder clips, download and print Mystery Men! and you’re ready to fight crime.

While you’re at it, browse Takara’s gallery – you won’t be disappointed.

PS – Just got my hard copy of Mystery Men! delivered from Lulu. Came out great – I opted for stapled binding this time so the book would be easier to lay flat on a table while playing the game. Should have it up for sale soon!

The Danger Dolls!

When Department Zero, a super-secret arm of the Secret Service, needed well-traveled agents that could act as couriers throughout the world, they naturally turned to fashion models. When those models became too old to compete at the highest level of the modelling world (like, 26 or so), Department Zero took their three most promising agents and trained them to become world class operatives codenamed the Danger Dolls. Through rigorous combat and espionage training and highly classified atomic spa treatments, Department Zero created the three most dangerous women on earth:

Delilah Delacroix, former pin-up queen and native of New Orleans. Delilah is trained in several martial arts and has proven to be a natural acrobat. Delilah is a hell raiser with a thirst for new experiences.

Debbie Dalton, former all-American swimsuit model and native of Los Angeles. Debbie has become a master of disguise and an expert marks-woman. Debbie has a laid back attitude about everything but her job.

Desiree Drake, former high fashion model and native of New York City. Desiree is an expert in electronics and explosives. Desiree is the epitome of grace and breeding, and an incredible snob.

What the Danger Dolls do not know, is that Department Zero is not what they think it is. Rather than being a super secret arm of the U.S. Secret Service, it is in fact an arm of SMASH. While their missions are usually “good”, they often contain the seeds of evil. There are some in the organization that believe Desiree has caught on to this and they fear what she might do next.

An Egg-Cellent Birthday!

Vincent Price was born on this day 100 years ago. A century! If you’re from my generation, you grew up with Price being known for his spooky movies – I don’t know that they would be considered horror movies anymore, but they were at least spooky and weird. And speaking of weird, he also played one of Batman’s freakish foes – Egghead!

Enjoy the madness!

And with Egghead statted up, can Egg Fu be far behind? Robert Kanigher was like the Fiend Folio of comic book heroes and villains.

Mystery Men! Now Available As Free PDF

Just click the Mystery Men! cover to your right and you can download the game from Lulu.com for free. I’ll have the book available soon – looks like it will be in the $8 to $9 range. I want to order one myself first and get a look at it to make sure the color images look okay in black and white. If not, I’ll have to make a second PDF with the black and white images in place of the color images and re-upload it … and nobody cares about this but me.

So, this final version includes all the rules you need to create heroes and villains and run scenarios. It also includes the Shore City sample setting and a sample scenario you can run.

Enjoy the free e-book for now, and the book will be coming very soon. If you find anything amiss with the e-book, please let me know so I can fix it before the book goes live. Also – if you download it, please take a few minutes, make a character, and share it with us here.

Edit: Already found an error! Apparently, an older draft of chapter 2 found its way into the game. Honestly, I have no idea how I managed to do it. Essentially, the only changes involved spelling, grammer and layout, so if you’ve downloaded it you could still play with chapter two as written, but I’m going to get that fixed as soon as possible – probably tomorrow morning sometime.

Have fun saving the world!

Mystery Men! Public Domain Theatre Presents …

The Phantom Creeps (1939)

I caught a bit of this on MST3K a few nights ago (God has blessed me with a daughter who loves MST3K and bad movies in general) and knew I had to do something with it. When I found out it was in the public domain, I was doubly determined.

This is the story of Dr. Zorka, a mad genius who discovered a radioactive meteorite in Africa and has used it to power all sorts of inventions. Foreign governments are after the meteorite and the inventions, so Zorka’s assistant Dr. Mallory brings in the U.S. Government. Zorka isn’t happy about that and so he plants one of his mechanical, exploding spiders on Capt. Bob West’s plane. Unfortunately, Zorka is unaware that West is taking Zorka’s wife back to HQ for questioning, and though West escapes from the explosion with a parachute, Zorka’s wife is killed. Zorka naturally swears vengeance upon all mankind and decides to conquer the world.

Zorka is a great representation of the mad scientist archetype, and has been statted out accordingly.

Among his inventions are:

The Devisualizer Belt – Invested with Invisibility – costs 15,000 XP of his science pool.

Guardian Robot – As seen in the monster section of the MM! rules.

Mechanical Spider – A robot spider that is attracted to a magnetic disc (Locate – magnetic disc only) and then explodes with a poison gas (Sleep) – costs 6,000 XP of his science pool.

On the subject of Mystery Men! – I’ve finished my edits and I’m now preparing the file for upload to Lulu. Shouldn’t be long now!

Krime, Italian Style

I was perusing Super Punch this morning when I came across of a skull-faced gentleman called Kriminal. Having never heard of him, I checked him out on Wikipedia and one thing led to another. Here, for your edification and enjoyment are three Italian anti-hero/villains from the mid 1960s.

DIABOLIK
Created by Angela and Luciana Giussani in 1962

Diabolik is a master thief who mostly steals from criminals. He is not averse to killing, but rarely kills innocents or the police. Well versed in chemistry, mechanics and computers, he has a collection of life-like masks that allow him to adopt any identity. Diabolik was raised on a secret island by a criminal combine, the head of which he killed when he reached maturity. He is assisted by his partner and lover Eva Kant. The two live in the tiny kingdom of Clerville, the capitol of which is also Clerville. His arch enemy is Inspector Ginko.

KRIMINAL
Created 1964 by Magnus and Max Bunker

Anthony Logan is an Englishman, a master thief who wears a costume of black and yellow and a skull mask. Early in his career he is a brutal killer seeking vengeance against the criminals that pushed his father into committing suicide. He was raised in a reformatory, having lost his mother and sister when he was quite young, and eventually escaped from the place to pursue his revenge. Logan is assisted by Lola Hudson, ex-wife of his greatest rival, Inspector Patrick Milton of Scotland Yard.

SATANIK
Created by Max Bunker and Magnus, 1964

Satanik is a skilled chemist named Marny Bannister whose face is marred by an angioma. Following the theories of a mad alchemist, she develops a formula that transforms her into a charming beauty that has the side effect of making her a murderous criminal mastermind. She is hunted by Lt. Trent, whose companion she had killed. She eventually becomes engaged to marry black private detective Kriss Hunter.

Swampbilly for Mystery Men!

I’m going to hold off on posting a Megacrawl update until tomorrow or Wednesday – I want to make sure all the tactical geniuses who want to post a comment have had a chance. A first level party tangling with wererats could be a big deal – I want the Megacrawlers to have the best possible chance for survival.

In the meantime … Swampbilly

Five generations of Vances had hunted and trapped in the Louisiana bayou. minding their own business and doing no harm (well, except to the wildlife) when the federal government slated the area for mysterious highway project – mysterious because the locals couldn’t figure out just what the highway was supposed to connect. A few swamp families raised a fuss, but the g-men cleared them out in quick order – all except the Vances. The women and children found their way into government housing in New Orleans, but the men refused to leave and instead led the g-men on a merry chase through the wilderness.

Young Dovis Vance was among the more ornery of his family. Tall and good looking, he had a way with people and animals, and he more than the others was prone to wandering, harmonica in pocket, gun in hand. So it came that he found himself slipping past a hastily erected security fence and into the “highway zone”, where the federal government was working not on a highway in the traditional sense, but something much more impressive – a portal between worlds.

The project was in the experimental phase, and was intended initially to create a doorway between Earth and Mars using equipment seized many years before from Nazi scientists in the Arctic. As Dovis wondered at the tall, rectangular object standing in the midst of the swamp, it began to hum with activity and he found it impossible to move his feet. Arcs of electricity run up and down the black metal of the “door” until it began to vanish and he looked into a hazy vista of Mars. The experiment was over almost as soon as it had begun. The metal object returned to normal, Dovis found he could move again, and he high-tailed it back into the swamp.

Though he still looked normal on the outside, Dovis’ brush with the cosmic energies harnessed by the portal had left him a metahuman. Back with his father and brothers, he discovered much to his shock and delight, that with a thought he could change people with but a look and a thought. One night, when his brother Remi made a reach for his salt pork, an angry look changed the man into an oppossum. The others fled, of course (as did Remi), and Dovis soon found himself on his own. His travels took him first to little towns around New Orleans, and a crime spree that found him changing bank guards and tellers into ‘gators and him walking away with many thousands of dollars. In good time, government operatives made Louisiana too hot for him, and he followed the river north, where he finally found a home in the wetlands south of Shore City and a new community to torment.

Greatest Book You’ll Ever Get Your Hands On?

Somehow I doubt this book lives up to its cover blurb.

Meanwhile, some Wonder Woman stats for Mystery Men! – just ’cause.

In response to a comment that has now disappeared – Super Will should have been +3, not +6. When I create these hero/villain stats, I’m now assuming ability scores of 3 across the board, and then adjusting them up from there. Of course, I also adjust them down as appropriate.
